As a life long educator and superintendent of the future, I have witnessed a multitude of physical buildings that house American school children. Some of them are buildings a beautiful new architecture, while others have been 100 years old, small rural schools. Public schools are a source of allergens, germs and nuances of the environment that affect the quality of the child’s daily life. This year, the main threat for many schools was the MRSA virus. With the closure of some schools and others experiencing decline in attendance due to this particular disease alone, of dollars worth of assistance fell down. With the school budget is a major concern of many superintendents, where the assistance is reduced, so is the budget.
I worked in an old house 100 years school. What is a charming place it was! I thought it was “Little House on the Prairie” as I idealized the whole experience. Traditionally, the lights the roof is enough to distract children from normal schools, even with the constant blinking, buzzing and vibration. Many autistic children are not capable of being in the classroom and mothers may bring home knowing that the sets of buzz out of your child. This lighting can influence seizures and tic disorders. Children with ADHD are distracted by the frequency, too. Our children, as a whole are becoming very sensitive to many conditions that fifty years ago might not bother a child. Schools need to address the needs of all children and the fact that this is becoming so common, we must do what is in the best interest of all children and provide the right kind of lighting does not cause adverse reactions.
I do not know about you, but when I enter a room, I realize how clean it is. When I look at the walls and see the stains and marks and then looking at the floor and a layer of dirt on the motherboard, I think the dirt, that simple. You have no idea how many teaching jobs that took place and noted trash on a regular basis. Children breathe dust and generally creating a very bad example.
What are the schools supposed to do to address this health threat? With the No Child Left Behind and English Language Learners Demand, school districts are at a premium to make their own budgets without additional costs to meet many of these issues. The child is entitled to be educated in a safe environment, so yes, we focus on the health of the school building to ensure the health of our children. There are air purifiers that may be the answer to some of the problems. Buying the right air purifier for the school could be explored. Some air purifiers are built to kill germs, fungi, viruses and bacteria, as well filter dust and pollen. Purification systems purchase of several only pay for themselves in the long run with money from a school or business (including hospitals) will save on the diseases or closures due to MRSA or other diseases. There are laboratory studies have shown that support these seeds of death with certain brands.
High stakes tests that also benefit from a clean air test session. Who knows, test results may increase because children are not sneezing allergens of dust mites or pollen in the classroom and are able to fully concentrate on the exam.
Search for money in the budget will be the hardest part of the equation. That said, I’m realistic enough to know that this is going to be a major concern for school board agenda. I think it is possible for groups parents to meet and exchange ideas of what best can be done to raise money to buy air purifiers.
